11,700 get loans converted

PTPTN rewards students who obtained ho got first-class honours degrees

PTPTN chairman Datuk Ismail Mohd Said says the fund cannot grant scholarships to those who graduated outside its set dates

KUALA LUMPUR: A TOTAL of RM339.07 million worth of National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) loans were converted into scholarships as of Dec 31.

PTPTN chairman Datuk Ismail Mohd Said told the New Straits Times the conversion was for loans taken by 11,764 students, who had obtained first-class honours degrees from both public and private universities.

He said the number of rejected applicants stood at 5,389 last year.

“The majority of the rejected applications comprised of diploma or master’s holders, second-class upper degree holders and those who obtained a first-class honours degree after July 1, 2005 and before Jan 1, 2010.

“We  received many appeals but they  have to be rejected because they did not fulfil the criteria,” said Ismail.

Of those who appealed, 831 were first-class honours graduates.

“The 2010 budget  does not include loan conversions of  students who graduated within that period. Unfortunately, we had to turn down these 831 applications.”

There were  8,682 graduates who completed their course before July 1, 2005, qualifying for the exemption. This amounted to RM252.13 million.

The remainder — 3,082 graduates who had taken loans totalling RM84.94 million — were those who completed their studies after Jan 1, 2010.

In order to apply for loan conversions, applicants need to submit a loan conversion form, accompanied by certified copies of:

   UNIVERSITY  degree;

  FINAL  academic transcript;

  FIRST-CLASS  honours confirmation letter (if  not stated on the degree); and,

  CERTIFICATE  of accreditation by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (only applicable to private university graduates).

Processing an applications takes about 60 working days, after which PTPTN will inform graduates of their  status.
